From today’s “Los Angeles Times” (October 2, 2002):

“Asked about a Congressional budget office estimate that war could cost as much as $9 billion a month, the president’s spokesman said: ‘The cost of a one-way ticket is substantially less than that. The cost of one bullet, if the Iraqi people take it on themselves is substantially less than that.”

The cost of global anarchy has yet to be reported. But an original cast CD of Stephen Sondheim’s “Assassins” will probably put you back about $15.00.

Buy it and thrill to the lovely and talented Victor Garber as John Wilkes Booth singing “The Gun Song” —

“All you have to do
is move your little finger
Move your little finger and —
You can change the world.
Why should you be blue
When you’ve your little finger?
Prove how just a little finger
Can change the world.”

Of course President Bunnypants and his “Chief White House Spokesman” Ari Fleischer may be less sanguine about that show’s opening number:

“Hey pal — feelin’ blue?
Don’t know what to do?
Hey, pal —
I mean you–
C’mere and kill a president.
No job? Cupboard bare?
One room, no one there?
Hey, pal, don’t despair —
You wanna shoot a president?
C’mon and shoot a president…”

Yep, there’s no business like show business.

Except maybe for politics.
