Dear Mr. Castellano:
Thank you for taking the time to share with me your concerns about possible military action against Iraq. This week the President addressed the nation about this possibility. This was a solemn occasion for every American.
In his speech, the President gave Saddam Hussein one last chance to avoid war, and the world hopes that Saddam Hussein will finally hear this ultimatum, understand the severity of those words, and act accordingly.
While I wish that there were more international support for the effort to disarm Saddam Hussein, at this critical juncture it is important for all of us to come together in support of our troops and pray that, if war does occur, this mission is accomplished swiftly and decisively with minimum loss of life and civilian casualties.
I have had the honor of meeting and speaking with many of our brave men and women in uniform. They are the best trained, equipped, and motivated military in the entire world. I believe that all Americans agree that we must support them fully and we are grateful for their courageous service in these difficult times.
Again, I appreciate hearing from you and having the chance to know and consider your views. For regular updates on this and other important issues being discussed before the United States Senate, please check my website at http://clinton.senate.gov. Please continue to share with me your thoughts and concerns, and I will continue to make every decision in the Senate with care and deliberation.
