Cherry Picking

A Letter to the Editor of the New York Times

Dear Sir / Ms.

It was rather startling to see a journalist as presumably sophisticated as Bernard Weinraub resurrect the cobweb-covered term “bachelor” to describe an openly gay man. But that’s precisely what he did in today’s profile of Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry.

That Mr. Cherry, who I had the pleasure of interviewing for my book Open Secret: Gay Hollywood 1928-2000, has much to say about what insights he, as a gay man, might have on a show about married women has made its way into several articles. So why does has the New York Times elected to regard him the way the Republican party does Mary Cheney?
