Happy Labor Day

With fascism on the rise and union membership on the decline it’s wonder this holday hasn’t been stricken from the calendar already.

But it persists as do the working poor (the middle-class having gone the way of the dinosaur. )

So if you’re looking for something to cheer you up, get ahold of Pins and Needles

This is the 1962 record of Harold Rome’s 1937 International Ladies Garment Workers Union show.

As you can see a Barbra named Streisand is on this album, and as it’s one of her earliest efforts she’s in fine form.

My favorite cut is as timely today as it was nearly 70 years ago

“It’s darker than the dark bottom
It rumbles more than the Rumba
If you think that the two-steps got ‘em
Just take a look at this number
It’s got that certain swing
That makes you wanna sing
Don’t go left, but be polite
Move to the right
Doing the reactionary
Close your eyes to where you’re bound
And you’ll be found
Doing the reactionary
All the best dictators do it
Millionaires keep steppin’ to it
The Four Hundred love to sing it
Ford and Morgan swing it
Hands up high and shake your head
You’ll soon see red
Doing the reactionary
Don’t go left, but be polite
Move to the right
Doing the reactionary
Close your eyes to where you’re bound
And you’ll be found
Doing the reactionary
All the best dictators do it
Millionaires keep steppin’ to it
The Four Hundred love to sing it
Ford and Morgan swing it
Hands up high and shake your head
You’ll soon see red
Doing the reac-
Doing the reac-
Tionary
So get in it, begin it
It’s smart, oh, so very
To do the reactionary!”
