When Neil Patrick Harris, star of the surpisingly not bad CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother
(seen above with his dog and his boyfriend “Tulsa”)
“came out of the closet,” (thus officially confirming what everyone with half brain has known for years) it provided us all with a jolt of pure unalloyed queer joy. Here is an actor who on television plays one of the slickest heterosexual lotharios ever concieved and in real life is a Big Ol’ Gay Homosexual.
Does it get any more Fabulous?
But no sooner had the balloons and confetti settled on the dance floor than a TV Guide scribe named Jon Hein blew this verbal fart in a piece about TV shows that had “jumped the shark.”
6. How I Met Your Mother (CBS)
NPH comes out. It’s been going in circles all season, and Barney’s womanizing just doesn’t ring true
Can I get an “OH, PRUNELLA!” ?
Of course I can — and in record time too.
“So how exactly does his womanizing not ring true anymore? Your entry makes it sound like NPH coming out is the reason. If it’s something in the writing then you’re going to have to do a better job of explaining.
Also, you’re the only person I know of who thinks this season is not as good. Most people actually think it’s better. “
wrote one annoyed TV Guide reader.
“I really don’t know how someone could think that HIMYM is not as good this season. Slap Bet for just one example was funnier than anything last year. The “Grinch,” Lilly being mistaken for a hunchback….. all funnier than anything last year.
Your explanation doesn’t really make sense to me. I don’t understand why you would bring up NPH coming out if it didn’t have something to do with you not believing his character. Otherwise why mention it. “
Thus forcing Hein to add a. . .uh. . .“clarification”
“This season of HIMYM is not as strong as the last one. There are a number of different reasons why a show jumps the shark. For me, the moment on this show concides with when NPH came out.
I’m not judging what he did in his personal life. I’m not saying he is a bad actor. In fact, his womanizing Barney makes me realize how talented of an actor NPH is.
It’s the timing of NPH’s announcement, not the content. Sorry for any confusion.
Furthermore, Marshall and Lily never should have broken up”
Oh yes you’re judging! “Doogie’s” Homomagnificence clearly disturbs you. I’ll bet the gay-friendliness of the other characters (on full display in the episode where they all go to a gay disco and have a marvelous time) rankles you as well.
And as anyone who follows the show knows the Marshall and Lily break-up was not only destined to be short-lived, it livened up the plot in the process.
This all began when some Canadian newspaper claimed that “Doogie” was trying to get “Tulsa” a spot on the show. Let’s hope so. They can sing Sondheim together.
Or better still, Lorenz Hart
doesn’t have to have a moon in the sky
doesn’t need a blue lagoon standing by
No month of May
No twinkling stars
No soft guitar
doesn’t need a castle rising in Spain
Nor a dance
to a constantly surprising refrain
I can make my most fantastic dreams come true
doesn’t need a thing but you.”
