All Hail Tim Page for his Pravda obit of Gian Carlo Menotti in which he notes –

“Menotti won a second Pulitzer for “The Saint of Bleecker Street” in 1955 and shared in yet a third when he fashioned the libretto for his longtime lover Samuel Barber’s “Vanessa” in 1958.”

Let’s run that through one more time, shall we?

“Menotti won a second Pulitzer for “The Saint of Bleecker Street” in 1955 and shared in yet a third when he fashioned the libretto for his longtime LOVER Samuel Barber’s “Vanessa” in 1958.”

That’s right, boys and girls. Samuel Barber was Gian Carlo Menotti’s LOVER — a marvelously precise word, far too long superceded by the revoltingly antiseptic “partner.”

Law firms have “partners.” The man I’ve shared my life with since 1971 is not a law firm.

Needless to say it could be worse. Consider Bernard Holland in the NYT

“At Curtis, Mr. Menotti began perhaps the decisive partnership of his life — with the American composer Samuel Barber. They lived, traveled and worked together intermittently until Mr. Barber’s death in 1981.”

That’s right, folks. Sam was Gian Carlo’s “roommate” and “travelling companion.” His Cornelia Otis Skinner as it were.

FUCKING PATHETIC!!!

But glbt America has no one but itself to blame for encouraging this lamentable state of affairs. No wonder there’s such resistance to “partners” getting married. There is no love in partnership.

No nookie either.
