Sandra Bernhard issued a blistering warning to Sarah Palin during a performance of her new one-woman show.
The Republican V.P. nom would be “gang-raped by my big black brothers” if she enters Manhattan, Bernhard said. Palin is said to be making a campaign stop in New York next week.
“[The gang rape comment] is part of a much larger, nuanced, and yes, provocative (that’s what I do) piece from my show about racism, freedom, women’s rights and the extreme views of Governor Sarah Palin, a woman who doesn’t believe that other women should have the right to choose,” Bernhard told the Daily News today.
“Women deserve better,” she continued. “I certainly wish Governor Palin no harm. I’d just like her to explain to me how she can hold such outrageous views – and then go back to Alaska.”
The controversial comedian targets Palin as part of her “Without You I’m Nothing” stage show this month at Washington, D.C.’s Theater J.
“Now you’ve got Uncle women like Sarah Palin who jumps in this shit and points her fingers at other women,” Bernhard says, before launching into the several minutes’ long diatribe against Palin, calling her a “turncoat bitch.
“Call the shit in and tell them what I said tonight,” she says, to laughs and cheers from the audience.
CONTROVERSIAL comedian Sandra Bernhard has been thrown off the ticket at a charity benefit show after claiming Sarah Palin would be gang-raped in New York.
Bernhard made the comments about the Alaskan Governor and Republican vice presidential candidate at a show in Washington, before defending the statements on her website.
A women’s shelter in Boston has since cut Bernhard from its annual benefit in response to the comments, the Associated Press reported.
Bernhard made the remarks last month during a one-woman show, before Palin visited New York to campaign. She said Palin would be “gang-raped by my big black brothers” during a diatribe in which she also criticised Palin for opposing abortion rights.
Spokeswoman for Boston shelter Rosie’s Place Leemarie Mosca said many of the women at the shelter had been victims of violence and said the comedian’s comments were out of order.
“In light of our mission, we don’t think violence against women is a laughing matter,” she told AP
Mosca said the shelter expected to book a replacement before the October 16 luncheon, “Funny Women … Serious Business”.
“Right now, our main focus is our event and making sure the event is a success,” Mosca said.
“And for us, that means not including Sandra Bernhard at this time.”
A representative for Bernhard had no comment on the cancellation.
In a statement on her website, Bernhard said the gang-rape comment was part of a larger piece from her show about “racism, freedom, women’s rights, and the extreme views of Governor Sarah Palin – a woman who doesn’t believe that other women should have the right to choose”.
“I certainly wish Governor Palin no harm – I’d just like her to explain to me how she can hold such outrageous views … and then go back to Alaska,” she said.
Palin opposes abortion, including in cases of rape and incest.
