You Gotta Give ‘em Hope

Bob

According to everybody’s least-favorite bisexual tosspot–

“To be paralyzingly, painfully, hopelessly unfunny is not a particular defect or shortcoming in, say, a cable repair man or a Supreme Court justice or a Navy Seal. These jobs can be performed humorlessly with no loss of efficiency or impact. But to be paralyzingly, painfully, hopelessly unfunny is a serious drawback, even lapse, in a comedian. And the late Bob Hope devoted a fantastically successful and well-remunerated lifetime to showing that a truly unfunny man can make it as a comic. There is a laugh here, but it is on us.”

The laugh is on anyone who thinks that Hitchens The Walking Liver Spot has anything of interest to say. As for the rest of us, still reeling from Obama and Company’s continued fealty to a sworn enemy named Joe Lieberman, this scene from The Ghost Breakers comes to mind.

Of course it’s just about impossible to mention Bob without Bing. So let’s end on this note of pure blissplaced in hommage to that greatest of Bing and Bob fans — Mel Brooks.)

Time does not wither (etc. etc.) Burke & Van Heusen’s song.

More to the point … didn’t Joe Orton lose his virginity during a screening of the Hope vehicle “My Favorite Brunette”? That must count for *something*.

You know I believe you’re right. And in my book that counts for a lot. Frank O’Hara describes this primal scene perfectly in his great poem “Ave Maria.”
