Chuck Tatum Strikes Back

I’m sure we’ve all seen THIS

How could we not? Hour after hour given over to a story whose simple truth was THIS

That’s because we live in a “Mainstream Media” culture where PICTURES trump everything. Even when the meaning of said pictures are — to say the least — highly questionable.

Tons simpler to aim the camera at this crap than deal with Health Care, Afganistan, Unemployment, et. al.

That’s because it’s all tuend into our lust for spectacle — as explicated in excruciating detail by the the great Billy Wilder

In this case, of course, another wise “Media Maven” of the past — Maurine Watkins — plays a significant touchstone role. The author of Chicago would have smelled the shit a mile away.

Isn’t that right Liza?

I remember reading some time ago (in of all places Time Mag, I think) about the tabloidization of the news. It does amaze that all we seem to have time for anymore is this kind of B.S. We aren’t even provided bread and circuses by our emperors, just the circus.

I figure that as a civilization we probably deserve everything that is going to happen to us. I just don’t think that I do.

Weve become an Image Uber Alles culture. Because there are pictures we get a story — even when there isn’t a story. You know the saying “a picture’s worth a thousand words”? Well sometimes it’s not even worth ONE.

These grifters figured out how to play the media for the suckers that we so often are.
